Meet Flinders' New Dean of Students, Remy Melia

The Dean of Students role provides leadership, management and support to students across Years 7 to 12 in areas of pastoral care and wellbeing. The role complements the Dean of Studies role, held by Mr Gary Davis, which is focused on supporting students' academic growth throughout the Secondary School journey, through improved study skills and preparation for assessments and examinations, along with analysing data.

We asked Remy to share more about his vision, experience in schools and career growth in this Q&A profile.

Q: Remy, what skills, experience and vision do you bring to your role? 

I pride myself on having strong organisational skills and displaying a calm approach, as well as building genuine relationships. My focus will be on supporting our students in their pursuit of continual growth, ensuring they allow themselves, and their peers, the best possible opportunity to succeed, so that they can be well equipped to confidently overcome the many challenges life will throw at them.

Q: What do you enjoy about working in a school? 

I enjoy that not every day is the same, and we as teachers are along the ride with students from the day they enter, to beyond them leaving.

Q: What are you looking forward to about being a part of Flinders? 

I look forward to working with staff and students in further enhancing the #proudtobeflinders culture, where students feel empowered, connected and courageous—both now and in the future. In particular, I have a strong interest in student leadership and wellbeing, and look forward to adding value to the various programs within these areas. 

Q: Please share some of your career journey. 

I began my career in education at The Southport School (TSS) on the Gold Coast in various roles spanning a 10-year period, including HPE Teacher, Sports Co-ordinator, Junior GPS Rugby Co-ordinator, Master in Charge of Cricket, and Coach of Rugby and Cricket teams. In 2018, I moved up to Hervey Bay as Director of Sport & Activities and Head of HPE at Fraser Coast Anglican College and, after a few years, moved into the role of Director of Senior Years. I have a Bachelor of Business (Sport Management), Graduate Diploma of Education and Master of Education (Educational Leadership) and I am currently a Board Member of ACHPER QLD (Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation).

Q: What do you enjoy about living on the Sunshine Coast?

We arrived on the Sunshine Coast in early January. The Sunshine Coast was my family holiday destination, so it has been great to be back where I have so many fond memories. In particular, I enjoy Mooloolaba!

Q: Please share a fabulous piece of advice that has served you well. 

A former mentor told me that “Good things happen to those who go out and get them” and this mentality has really helped me take risks and opportunities when they arise, instead of waiting around for things to happen or be handed to me.
